Biting Insects

A happy holiday is a well-planned holiday. So, you would want to be fully prepared...
Insect repellents are an essential bit of kit in most people’s holiday luggage.

In Skopelos, like in all Mediterranean places exist ants, spiders, mosquitoes, midges, beetles, horseflies, hornets, sand-flies, gnats, ticks, bees and –the biggest nuisance– wasps, all of them serving useful ecological function. Wasps, for example, pollinate flowers and crops. Without wasps we would have many more pests; they eat ticks, they feed houseflies to their young and they prey on many other insect pests.

Anyone can become allergic as a result of a wasp or bee sting, not just those predisposed to other allergies.

Prevention is easy with the highly effective range of insect repellent sprays, creams, roll-ons and gels available, although some are not suitable for children under 6 years, so look for products specially designed for them.

What to do if you are bitten or stung

  • If the sting is embedded, remove it quickly.
  • Don’t squeeze or scratch. Use a sting relief product to relieve irritation.
  • Hydrocortisone cream (for bites only) or antihistamine tablets also provide relief and reduce inflammation.
  • Difficulty with breathing, wheezing or nausea may mean a severe allergic reaction which needs immediate medical attention.

How to avoid being bitten

  • If a wasp lands on you do not panic, gently blow on it until it flies away.
  • To minimize the risk of being stung when wasps or bees are present, avoid any sudden movements or gestures.
  • Wear long sleeved tops and trousers after dark, especially at dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Strong perfumes, after-shaves and dark colors tend to attract mosquitoes.
  • If you are sitting outside, use citronella candles. The distinctive odor of the Citronella plant is supposed to prevent insects from detecting humans.
  • Use an insect repellent on all exposed areas. Reapply insect repellent regularly.
  • If you leave the windows open at night, draw the curtains; or even better use a mosquito net, which should enable you to sleep in peace.
