In Skopelos, like in all Mediterranean places exist ants, spiders, mosquitoes, midges, beetles, horseflies, hornets, sand-flies, gnats, ticks, bees and –the biggest nuisance– wasps, all of them serving useful ecological function. Wasps, for example, pollinate flowers and crops. Without wasps we would have many more pests; they eat ticks, they feed houseflies to their young and they prey on many other insect pests.
Anyone can become allergic as a result of a wasp or bee sting, not just those predisposed to other allergies.
Prevention is easy with the highly effective range of insect repellent sprays, creams, roll-ons and gels available, although some are not suitable for children under 6 years, so look for products specially designed for them.
